So you want to know who the person is behind the blog? Well, I’m a graduate of archaeology turned marketing professional who has been writing fiction for over twenty years.
I was informed as a teenager that writers don’t make money, so I’d need to think of a different career and keep my writing as a hobby. But I’m far too stubborn for that, so I decided to have the best of both worlds. Yes! When I grew up, I would be a writer and a showjumper/journalist/librarian/museum curator/archaeologist/veterinary nurse/animal behavourist…
I ended up in admin. Obviously.
It’s okay though, because I like admin. I am a passionate creator and maintainer of lists and coveter of stationary. And my admin roles led me to discover marketing, a career where you can be both organised and creative. Gasp! Unfortunately marketing also comes with industry cliches and unnecessary meetings and arguments that make you wonder how we went from living in caves to wasting away in offices.
So I quit my marketing job and became a freelance writer for a year. I learned all about different types of writing, but you know what I didn’t do? Write any fiction!
No, full time freelancing wasn’t for me. I needed to find the right balance. And here I am, back in an office to pay the bills and so that I stop talking to the fridge, and continuing my career as a fiction and freelance writer in my spare time.
I’m a fantasy writer, which started off during my teen vampire phase and was cemented by the scene in The Fellowship of the Ring when they first enter Moria. I also write horror and science fiction, because that corner in the bookshop is muddled together for a reason.
I’m a geek who adores film as well as books, so I ask you to excuse any posts about film on this blog. And I’m obsessive. But I’ll apologise for that as we go along.
